If there are parents of SM kids in the CT/RI/MA/NH/VT/ME area who would like to meet, even aperiodically, pls contact me. I know there must be many of us in the area, and it would be great if we could exchange notes on resources, counselors that work, strategies, tips, etc. thanks!! Added: May 1, 2011 |

My 8 year old niece was diagnosed with SM. She stopped talking when she was 4 years old. The thing is, that she won't stop talking when she is with her family, but at school she never makes a sound. At home, she won't sit down and play quietly by herself and she interrupts conversations. The most annoying thing is that she "talks" to us with her lips closed, makes the verbal sounds through her nose and talks really fast in a high pitched "voice". The only time she opens her mouth is when she laughs at something inappropriatly and it comes out as a scream, it hurts our ears. We are trying to be sensitive to her but I wouldn't let any child "get away " with that type of outburst, she also sometimes just opens her mouth and screams as loud as she can. We say to her that she doesn't need to be that loud, or we call her name and ask her to use inside voice. When we asked her why she was keeping her mouth closed when she talks, she said, "somebody has to be different". She was speaking very well as a two year old and pronounced every word. She is very intelligent. But now, her voice is the same as it was at two, it sounds like a baby voice and it comes through her nose, most of the time, we can't understand what she is saying because her pronounciation has gotten "sloppy" (for lack of a better word) we don't know what to do, the therapist said she couldn't do any more work with her. The hypnotists said that she was so smart he couldn't get her to "go under" anymore. My niece also stopped hugging, smiling, and in photos, she just has a blank look on her face. It's like a light went out. Please, someone, give us some advice on what else we can do to help this child. Please don't tell us she will out grow it. She tells us that she is never going to change. We just need some help finding some solutions. Thanks to anyone who has any advice. Added: March 24, 2011 |

I am 15 with SM. I've had it since I was five. No one ever did anything to get me help. It's gotten slightly better, but I don't do well in school since I can't participate. Does anyone have suggestions to help me get treatment? Added: February 21, 2011 |
