Pre College Programs

Some colleges/universities may offer an “Upward Bound” program, which helps young students prepare for
higher education. The program provides educational programs to motivate and support students from
disadvantaged backgrounds and assist low-income, first-generation college students.

Students take classes in English, math, and science on college campuses on Saturdays, and during the
summer. Throughout the school year the program provides academic support to the students. On Saturdays,
enrichment classes are held for extra support in math, reading, grammar, and computer science. After-school
tutoring is offered as well as counseling for academics, career preparation and personal needs. Assistance
is given to high school seniors with college admission process and financial aid application.

The summer component consists of living on campus in residence halls for six weeks (students usually go
home on the weekends). They attend academic classes; enrichment courses, and participates in sports,
recreational activities and related courses. The summer program helps students obtain skills, and the
motivation to succeed in college.

Some students are given the opportunity to take up to six hours of college credit and have tuition paid for.
Upper Bound is a TRIO program, which is funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (US
Department of Education). These programs help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to
higher education. There is no cost to the student to participate in Upper Bound. Students receive stipends for
attendance and participation in the program.

To be eligible parents must not have a four-year college degree and must meet income guidelines. The
program recruits high school students from 9th, 10th and 11th grade from targeted counties and schools.
Students receive academic instruction, ACT/SAT test preparation, college workshops, and visit college
campuses. They participate in cultural activities and leadership opportunities. Tutoring is provided to support
academic classes taken, and for preparation for ACT/SAT test. Goals of the program are to prepare and
motivate high school students for a post-secondary education.

For more information on Upper Bound please check with your high school counselor to see if this program is
available in your school. Or you may contact the US Department of Education.
