Selective Mutism & Siblings
EFFECTS OF SELECTIVE MUTISM ON SIBLINGS

Some younger children may copy the silent behavior of a sibling with Selective Mutism. Although the younger child may be a bit
shy by nature most of the not speaking is a learned behavior. The younger child usually does not have any symptoms of Selective
Mutism and look to their sibling to see how to handle social situations. This is very frustrating as siblings often face social
situations together. Therefore, it may be necessary to engage the younger sibling in activities to encourage speaking in all
settings as you would the Selective Mutism child. At least temporary until you see improvement. Usually, when the Selective
Mutism child starts making improvement so does the younger child as they see and imitate the older child’s behavior..
